monum. LeieslagBack Koning Albertpark, Kortrijk
This monument was erected in memory of the Belgian servicemen who died during the Battle of the Lys in World War II. On horseback you see King Leopold the Third, the only statue of him anywhere in Belgium. Apart from Leopold III you can see six soldiers from all branches of the armed forces (army, air force, navy, etc). There are soldiers buried at the monument, nine in total. The soldiers were from nine different provinces. The Battle of the Lys lasted around 18 days and cost the Belgian army 3,000 men. Most of the victims died between 23 and 28 May 1940.
