Type 22 Pillbox with modification for Boys Anti-Tank rifle.

This Type 22 pillbox is typical of many that lie scattered across the Norfolk/Suffolk border. It lies at a road junction just to the north of a minor crossing of the Hundred river and defends the area to the south; it is sited on the bed so as to surprise any enemy vehicle that was approaching along the road. The small square holes at the base of the walls are almost certainly to accommodate the Boys anti-tank rifle, although this would have meant that any infantryman using the rifle embrasure would have had their feet exposed to enemy fire.
