Anti-Tank Ditch and Earthwork of the Outer London Defence RingBack Epping Forest
The anti-tank ditch of the Outer London Defence Ring continued from the road barrier on the Epping Road at TL 4362 0033 southwards to the W of Ambresbury Banks, through the forest to meet the road barrier on the Theydon Bois road at TQ 4351 9955.
- Year of construction
S of this barrier the ditch continued on the W side of "The Ditches Ride" to eventually exit the woods at TQ 436 987. Although greatly reduced, the ditch and embankment can still be traced from the Epping Road to the Theydon Bois road and S of this road to TQ 4335 9905. The ditch has been filled in but can still be seen as a wide, boggy depression. The embankment on its W side is almost continuous and although its original height is reduced in some places, in others it stands 5 - 6 feet (1.5 - 1.8 m) above the ditch. An aerial photograph taken in 1960 clearly shows the line of felled trees through the forest.
