The memorial stone on the front wall of town house Sint Janstraat 9 commemorates the reconstruction of Middelburg after the great fire on 17 May 1940. Town house Sint Janstraat 9 was the first town house being rebuilt. In the other town houses being rebuilt during World War II a memorial stone, representing a Phoenix, was placed in the front wall.
